Considering Gender, Improving Our Research:
A Workshop with UWA’s Guest Professor ‘Gender in Manuscript Cultures’ Britta Frede
Gender and diversity perspectives can highlight cross-disciplinary issues that, even when they do not go on to define distinct research agendas, can enrich existing projects in written artefact studies. In particular, paying attention to power structures and social stratification is essential to contextualising cultural practices and their material and immaterial evidence. Such contextualisations in turn allow us to gain a more layered and comprehensive picture of the written artefacts we study and to identify some of the blind spots that weaken our approaches.
After a short presentation based on her research experience, Britta Frede will examine together with workshop participants the latter’s research profiles to reflect on how they might be strengthened through the incorporation of analytical perspectives focused on gender and other diversity dimensions often intersecting with it.
The workshop is a collaboration between the Cluster of Excellence Understanding Written Artefacts and the project 360° Gender in Research (GinF).
